Oscar Piastri headed the sole practice session at the Miami Grand Prix after a low-speed crash for Oliver Bearman brought proceedings to an early end.

The McLaren driver set the quickest time moments earlier with a best time of 1’27.128. He brushed the barrier at the exit of turn 16 shortly before establishing the benchmark time.

Bearman’s car swapped ends in turn 12 and spun into a barrier. He apologised to his team before climbing out.

Lando Norris had to abandon his final run due to the red flags caused by Bearman. He made a slower start to his lap than his team mate but had just gone fastest in the middle sector when the session was halted.

That capped a frustrating session for Norris. He was unhappy with the condition of his car at the start of practice, complaining something had been left inside it. “There’s just, like, so many tools in the cockpit,” he reported on his radio before pitting. “Everything’s just falling apart.” The stewards summoned a McLaren team member to explain what had happened after the session.

Later in the session Norris had a near-miss with Esteban Ocon, who was approaching the hairpin slowly on the racing line, and moved away from it just as the McLaren driver tried to pass him on the inside. Norris had to take avoiding action – the stewards also announced they will investigate that incident.

Among those who were able to set flying laps on soft tyres before the session ended was Charles Leclerc, who set the second-fastest time. Max Verstappen, running an upgraded floor on his Red Bull, was third. The Williams pair completed the top five, Carlos Sainz Jnr ahead of Alexander Albon, who lost time behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli on his final run.

The Mercedes drivers headed the earlier times when most drivers ran on the medium rubber but did not have a chance to use softs at the end of the session. George Russell ended up seventh behind Isack Hadjar, Antonelli ninth behind Yuki Tsunoda. Fernando Alonso, one of the first drivers to run on softs, came 10th.
