The chequered flag drops and that’s two one-twos for McLaren on Friday at Imola. Here’s our report.
Bortoleto has been noted for a potential yellow flag infringement.
Verstappen tells his team he had picked up a up a nut but he’s dropped it.
The session will resume with two minutes remaining.
He’s going no further and the session has been red-flagged with six minutes remaining.
Isack Hadjar has gone off in the Racing Bulls but he’s ploughing through a gravel trap in an attempt to get going. He’s stuck at the exit of Tamburello.
“Something keeps touch my foot under braking into turn two,” reports Verstappen, clarifying it’s his “throttle foot.”
Leclerc: “Guys we need to work on the entry of five, nine, 11. It’s critical, I would say.” That’s Villeneuve, Piratella and Acque Minerali – all high-speed turn-ins.
Neither Ferrari driver is happy with their brakes. Leclerc calls his “horrendous.”
“These brakes are a problem mate,” remarks Hamilton after going 16th. He’s one place ahead of Antonelli who went off at Variante Alta.
A great job by Gasly puts the Alpine in third place.
A cracking lap by Piastri puts him on top by two hundredths of a second and he may have lost time in traffic in the final sector having been quickest in the first two.
Leclerc tightens things up even more at the top, taking third place. But Norris moves the benchmark ahead of all of them, a 1’15.318 putting him on top by 0.375 seconds. Now it’s down to Piastri.
Yuki Tsunoda, who knows Imola especially well from his many years at Red Bull’s second team, gets with a tenth of a second of Verstappen, placing third. But it’s only temporary as his former team mate Isack Hadjar splits the Red Bulls.
Verstappen comes close to beating that but he’s four-hundredths of a second down in the Red Bull.
Russell switches to the soft tyres and produces a 1’15.693 to head the times.
Gasly matches Piastri’s time for fifth-fastest. A good effort from Colapinto leaves him three-tenths of a second off his team mate.
Hamilton encounters Yuki Tsunoda who is dawdling at the exit of Acque Minerali.
The stewards again take no action over the impeding incident, as is fairly standard for practice, though Alonso can’t be too impressed.
The Williams drivers briefly took over at the top of the times but Norris takes it back with a 1’15.952.
Fernando Alonso, who was held up by Leclerc in the first session, now encounters Franco Colapinto on the way into Tamburello. “Yeah I mean I nearly crashed,” he reports.
Russell has joined the track and pops into second, just under three-tenths of a second off Norris.
Hamilton’s does a 1’17.099 for 12th. “Where’s a second?” he asks.
Oscar Piastri returns to the top of the times with a 1’16.526 but it’s short-lived as Lando Norris immediately takes four-tenths of a second off that. Verstappen then splits them.
There’s an error in Pirelli’s data as the cameras pick up Lewis Hamilton and reveal he’s clearly on mediums too.
Almost everyone is on the medium compound tyre. Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have opted for softs and George Russell is still in the pits.
Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto lead the cars out as second practice begins.
Ferrari appear to have slipped up in the first practice session. The FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer has referred them to the stewards for adjusting the tyre pressures on Charles Leclerc’s car between runs in an unapproved fashion.
The first practice session was extremely close with less than a tenth of a second covering the top five. Here’s what happened.
