Alexander Albon has lost his fourth place finish in the Miami sprint race after a penalty for failing to slow sufficiently during the Safety Car period.
The stewards found Albon lapped above the minimum time specified during the Safety Car period for three consecutive sectors. They gave him a five-second time penalty but did not consider the breach serious enough to deserve any penalty points.
“The driver of car 23 [Albon] was below the minimum time set in the ECU in three consecutive sectors at the beginning of the Safety Car period which is in breach of Art. 55.7 of the Sporting Regulations,” they noted. “Therefore the standard penalty is applied.
“The stewards note that the track conditions were not ideal and that no unsafe or dangerous situation was created by the driver and therefore do not issue any penalty points.”
Albon originally finished the race in fourth place. His penalty drops him to 12th, as Oliver Bearman has also been penalised for another incident. The stewards are also considering whether Liam Lawson, who originally finished seventh, should be penalised for his collision with Fernando Alonso.
George Russell therefore moves up to fourth place. Andrea Kimi Antonelli inherits the final point for eighth place.
