The start of the sprint race at the Miami Grand Prix has been suspended after heavy rain fell at the Miami International Circuit.
The formation lap began on time, albeit with drivers circulating behind the Safety Car due to the conditions. Race control sent the cars around for a second formation lap, then postponed efforts to start the race.
Several drivers complained about poor visibility during their two tours of the track. “I can’t see anything behind the Safety Car,” reported pole-winner Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Oscar Piastri, circulating behind him in second place, said: “This visibility is genuinely the worst I’ve ever had in a race car.” Max Verstappen skidded off as they circulated behind the Safety Car, but was able to regain his fourth place in the queue.
The drivers returned to the pits after the race was red-flagged. Race control subsequently announced the race would begin at 12:28pm local time, almost half an hour after the original scheduled start time.
Despite the conditions, almost every driver left the grid on the intermediate tyres for the original attempt to start the race. Only Carlos Sainz Jnr, who qualified 15th in his Williams, opted for the full wet-weather tyres.
Charles Leclerc was missing from the grid as he crashed during his reconnaissance lap.
