Fernando Alonso believes Aston Martin have made progress with their car despite failing to score from fifth on the grid at Imola.
The two Aston Martin drivers ran well inside the top 10 at one stage but lost out to drivers who were able to save time by making their first pit stops during a Virtual Safety Car period.
Alonso said his car felt strong until that point and he felt confident he was going to take his first points finish of the season.
“It was just unlucky,” he said. “The car was super today.
“We followed the McLarens and Russell at the beginning of the race, which was definitely a good surprise for us to be that competitive in the front part of the field. I think we were okay to secure P6 and P7 with both cars.
“Then the Virtual Safety Car gave the opportunity to everyone to stop and exit in front of us and our race was over. I think it’s extremely unlucky.”
Alonso made another pit stop during the final Safety Car period and climbed back up to 11th place at the finish.

“The car was competitive and I could fight,” he said. “Even at the end, I overtook three or four cars of the midfield in nine laps. So it’s something that we were not used to this year, so definitely a step forward.”
The result means Alonso remains point-less after the first seven rounds of 2025. However he is optimistic the team will be more competitive over the rest of the season.
“The final result is just pure bad luck,” he said. “Extreme bad luck, I think, today. But there’s going to be other races that we will have very good luck and we will take some points that maybe we don’t deserve. So let’s wait for another opportunity.
