Alonso pits and comes very close to pulling in front of Ocon, looks like very quick reactions there.
As Albon predicted, Lawson has backed the field up enough for Hadjar to pit too.
The stewards will investigate the Gasly-Tsunoda incident after the race.
Verstappen complaining furiously about Piastri: “He could have taken my front wing off. He didn’t leave space.”
Tsunoda: “Is he an idiot? What is he doing?”
The race hasn’t been neutralised, the drivers are having to pick their way through debris, Verstappen tried to use it to pass Piastri but the McLaren driver rebuffs him.
L9 Gasly has hit Tsunoda, he’s driving back with obvious race-ending damage which could be a penalty.
L6 Piastri is dropping back quickly from Leclerc. This looks tactical. The gap is over three seconds already.
L5 The race restarts. Tsunoda, 17th, is 6.5s behind Stroll and 23s off the lead. A pit stop costs around 19s, so that gap could be significant.
The delay to the restart is because the marshals are trying to move the barrier at Portier. VSC ending now.
L3 They’re still under what is now a very long VSC period.
L2 The VSC remains in force but no one else chooses to pit.
Bortoleto’s crashed at Portier but he’s got going again, a long way back from the pack. Virtual Safety Car deployed. Tsunoda, Gasly, Barman and Bortoleto pit.
The 2025 Monaco Grand Prix is go! Norris keeps the lead ahead of Leclerc.
The formation lap has begun.
Then it’s Sainz hard, Tsunoda soft, Hulkenberg medium, Russell and Antonelli hard, Bortoleto and Gasly medium, Colapinto and Stroll hard and finally Bearman on medium.
The top 10 drivers’ tyre choices for the start of the race are as follows: Norris, Leclerc and Piastri on medium. Verstappen on hard. Hadjar on medium. Alonso and Hamilton on hard. Ocon on medium. Lawson on soft. Albon on medium.
A problem for Oliver Bearman before the formation lap has even begun – he’s under investigation for his car being in an unsafe condition.
All 20 cars have assembled on the grid ready for the start.
The cars are heading out of the pits to begin their reconnaissance laps.
The FIA has confirmed the final starting grid for the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix.
One significant stewarding decision was made after qualifying. Lewis Hamilton was given a three-place grid drop. He therefore starts seventh instead of fourth.
Several drivers expected to see their rivals deployed tactically to hold up other cars to help their team mates. Alexander Albon, who starts 10th, may be especially eager to pass Liam Lawson at the start. “Liam will be the one that can create a lot,” said the Williams driver during the drivers’ parade. “He needs to protect Isaac [Hadjar].”
After qualifying yesterday Norris acknowledged his path to victory won’t be as straightforward for previous Monaco pole-winners in recent years, as Formula 1 has introduced special rules for this event only forcing drivers to make two pit stops. It looks like a regulation ripe for exploitation with cunning strategy and perhaps even some rule-bending – here’s a look at how on how the race could play out based on the starting grid.
Lando Norris is on pole position for the first time ever in Monaco. He’s never done this in Formula 1 or any junior series. He was fastest in qualifying on his debut at the track in the Formula Renault Eurocup nine years ago, but was stripped of pole position due to a technical infringement.
We’re one hour away from the start of the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix.
