Lando Norris won the sprint race in Miami by jumping ahead of his team mate Oscar Piastri through the pits.

The pair pitted on consecutive laps to swap their intermediate tyres for slicks as the track dried out. Norris, who had been pressuring Piastri hard, was the second to come in, but benefited from the appearance of the Safety Car after Fernando Alonso crashed. He won the Miami Grand Prix last year thanks to another fortuitously-timed Safety Car.

The start of the race was delayed after heavy rain fell in the late morning ahead of the noon start. Charles Leclerc eliminated himself from contention before the race even started when he crashed at turn 10 on his reconnaissance lap when the rain worsened.

After a half-hour delay the cars completed two formation laps behind the Safety Car and lined up on the grid for a standing start. Just as in Jeddah two weeks earlier, Piastri made a slightly better start from second on the grid than the pole-winner and dived for the inside.

As Piastri took the lead, Andrea Kimi Antonelli ran onto the run-off which allowed Norris and Max Verstappen by. Antonelli complained his rival had forced him off but the stewards decided no investigation was necessary.

The race was a largely processional affair until the conditions dried sufficiently for drivers to switch to slick tyres. Yuki Tsunoda, who started in the pits, was first to come in, and rose to ninth at the finish.

Lewis Hamilton, who struggled on the intermediates early in the race, followed soon afterwards. His pit stop from sixth prompted many others to do the same.

The McLaren drivers stayed out longer than most but Verstappen was quick to head in from third. Red Bull made a serious error during his stop, however, waving him out into the path of Antonelli’s Mercedes, causing contact between the two. The stewards hit him with a 10-second time penalty.

Piastri was under heavy pressure from Norris when the race leader finally pitted. Norris continued for another lap before pitting, but as he did Liam Lawson spun Fernando Alonso into a barrier at turn 12. The Safety Car was sent out as Norris was leaving the pits, obliging Piastri and the others on-track to slow down, and ensuring Norris emerged in the lead.

The race finished under the Safety Car, which amplified the effect of Verstappen’s 10-second penalty. He crossed the line fourth, having been passed by Hamilton, but fell to 17th and last of the runners.

Alexander Albon inherited fourth but is under investigation for a Safety Car infringement. George Russell took fifth ahead of Lance Stroll, who remains Aston Martin’s only points-scorer. Lawson, seventh, is under investigation for his collision with Alonso. Oliver Bearman therefore could move up from eighth and Tsunoda’s hopes of a point are not over yet.
