Norris goes second, three-hundredths off his team mate. They plus Russell and Hamilton are covered by less than a tenth of a second.
Russell reports his team mate’s car is bottoming a lot – sure enough the replay shows a cloud of smoke from the underside of the Mercedes on the approach to turn four.
Oscar Piastri sets a new benchmark with a 1’16.545 putting him 0.054s ahead of Russell.

Lap times are improving quickly as the track surface improves, with the result that both Ferraris and Verstappen are now among the bottom six.
Russell uses another set of softs to do a 1’16.599, putting him ahead by over half a second.
Norris finds more time out of the softs, the new C6 compound Pirelli has introduced this weekend, now down to a 1’17.125. But Bortoleto gives a further indication the soft isn’t that strong as he goes second on mediums, 0.423s off Norris.
Pierre Gasly has just done the fastest time on the medium tyre compound which was good enough for fourth, just 0.15s off the pace.
Lewis Hamilton moves up to third in the Ferrari, two-tenths of a second off the pace.
George Russell and Lando Norris posts updates in quick succession on softs, Norris on a 1’17.491, seven-hundredths ahead of the Mercedes.
Yuki Tsunoda hits the top of the times with a 1’18.538 putting him 0.242s ahead of Antonelli.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli sets the early pace with a 1’18.780. Fernando Alonso complains Charles Leclerc got in his way at the Variante Alta.
First practice is go in bright sunshine at Imola. The track is a toasty 37C.
There have been several changes to the lines around Imola to make the track limits clearer for drivers. the white line has been realigned and a blue line positioned one-and-a-half metres from the kerb or gravel (as applicable) at turns four (apex and exit), six (apex and exit), seven exit, nine exit, 11 exit, 12 (apex and exit), 15 exit, 17 exit and 18 exit, and 19 exit relative to the wall. The white line has also been realigned at the apex of turn 14.
There are no practice drivers scheduled to take part in this session.
