The Red Bull team is seeking to move Max Verstappen up a position in the Miami Grand Prix by submitting a protest against George Russell.
The Mercedes driver finished the race in third place, 2.3 seconds ahead of Verstappen. The FIA has confirmed Red Bull has submitted a protest against Russell for “failing to slow under yellow flags.”
Verstappen told his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase to look into whether Russell slowed after yellow flags were displayed in reaction to Gabriel Bortoleto coming to a stop. The Red Bull driver was running behind Russell at the time.
The stewards took no note of any potential incident by Russell at the time. However they did note Carlos Sainz Jnr and Pierre Gasly for potentially failing to slow when the yellow flags were displayed, and the pair ended the race under investigation.
Representatives of Williams and Alpine were summoned to the stewards immediately after the race. Mercedes have now been summoned to a hearing as well. No decision on any of the three investigations has yet been announced.
At last year’s Qatar Grand Prix, Verstappen alerted his team that Lando Norris behind him appeared not to have slowed down in response to yellow flags. Norris was subsequently given a 10-second stop-and-go penalty.
At the end of today’s race, Lambiase told Verstappen to stay as close to Russell as possible.
